College Tennis: Notes On History

With all the costs involved in pursuing a college degree, many high school tennis athletes are hoping to get noticed during college tennis recruiting. In the U.S., there is a collegiate circuit which is organized by the National Collegiate Athletics Association.

One of the most played games in the world today, tennis is a competition between two players (known as singles) or between two teams, consisting of two players each (also known as doubles). The tennis athletes hit a felt-covered ball with a racquet over a net into the opponent's court.

Tennis rose in popularity in the United Kingdom during the 19th century, particularly in England.  It was played in the Royal Tennis Court and Hampton Court Palace by Henry VIII from 1528. In his prime Henry played sports with vigor, and was particularly fond of tennis. Legend says he heard learned of the execution of Queen Anne Boleyn while he was in a tennis match at Hampton Court Palace.

number of improvements were made to the court during the 17th century. One of the first acts of Charles II after his restoration to the throne in 1660 was to order the extensive refitting of the Tudor Tennis Court. In this overhauling, a new tile floor was put in, galleries were remodeled and various repairs were made to the roof. New nets, curtains and velvet cushions for the spectator's seats were also installed. After that, the court has undergone little alteration. However, in 1975 sodium halide lighting was installed, making the court one of the best lit in Great Britain and possibly in the whole world.  The court is the oldest tennis court still in use in the world.
