The Classic Of Black Sapphire

Black Sapphire is part of the corundum family just like the blue sapphires, red ruby, yellow sapphire, etc. Most people would associate the black sapphire with a very dark blue sapphire and a very low clarity making the path for the light going through difficult, giving the gem a black color appearance. However this would not make it a perfect black sapphire.

The black sapphire should be completely black with no light passing through and no sign of any colors. In that way the gemstones can be more beautiful, with the same perfect black color all over the gemstone. Because of the nature of corundum, this black sapphire would only reflect the light and not absorb it as there is not clarity in this precious stone.

But achieving a perfect black sapphire that remains natural is much harder to do than just that. We must first select the origin the rough gemstones that will be as close to black as possible. There are some of these mines in Vietnam, China and Australia. After studying these different minerals, we came to the conclusion that the best source of rough sapphires for making the perfect black gemstone were from China.

Than comes the Heat treatment process.

Heat treatment is applied to more then 95% of all sapphires mined in the world. It is accepted by the industry and the gemologist associations as long as no chemical is applied to the gemstone. Heating specialists are mainly from Chantaburi, Thailand.

The black sapphire needs to be heated in a gaz, oil or electric oven depending on the characteristics of the rough corundum. Once the heating element is chosen, we must decide in which direction to apply the heating to the gem. Whether it is from the top or the bottom will also depend on the rough and on the size of the sapphire. Finally we must know how long to heat them for and at which temperature. Any mistake in these decisions will make the sapphire brake and we will lose that gemstone.

Black sapphires need to be cut and polished after. Once this is done, we can grade the gemstones according to the quality. The perfect black sapphire will have a uniform color and no trace of blue or light going through. It will make a very shining gemstone just like the black diamond.

CBS Gemstones - Black and Blue Sapphires is right now the best manufacturer of Black Sapphires. Many other factories have tried to achieve the perfect black sapphire but will less success. This is due not only to the expert craftsmanship that CBS uses for cutting and polishing their sapphires but also for their experience in heat treatment and grading gemstones.
