Liverpool Recovers the Second Position of the Premier League

During Sunday 1st of February, Liverpool managed to overcome its three ties chain by defeating Chelsea 2-0 in an encounter with some excitement that worked as stage to see Fernando Torres make his impressive goals that weren’t seen for the last couple of months; time during which the footballer from Madrid was out due to an injury.

This victory was the resurgence for the Reds after not being able to obtain the accustomed good results during the last month, which enliven their spirit just in time for their participation on the first knockout round of the UEFA Champions League.

From its part, Liverpool went out to the football field loaded with the best Spaniard players in its lineup: Pepe Reina, Alvaro Arbeloa, Fernando Torres, Xabi Alonso and Albert Riera; all in charge of facing a Chelsea that, despite giving a tough physical struggle, was lack of football quality.

The first part of this match involved a strong hand-to-hand battle, with a poor show that made evident the different weaknesses of each team; which gave the impression that their strategy was incomplete, as they could only snatch the ball and dangerously get closer to the rivals’ zone. Both contenders tried to take the necessary precautions to repel the plays that could result in a goal from the adversary; therefore the Reds reinforced their offense while Chelsea devoted to make powerful shots to the box.

The second half began with a higher intensity, as the Liverpool went in with all the intension of scoring, attacking potently with the purpose of dismantle the forceful defense of the Blues, which by then had turned in an apparently indestructible wall. But at the 60 minute, after the blues’ captain Frank Lampard was sent off, due to fault over Xabi Alonso, the Chelsea was left with the bitter taste of the numerical disadvantage.

Subsequently it turned in a tireless assail from Liverpool to the keeper Petr ?ech; until finally, the one in charge of piercing the shielding block was Fernando Torres, who took advantage of the minimum oversight of his enemy and strike the ball directly to the blue net at the minute 88.

Continuing pressuring the big wall blue created in front of ?ech, Rafa Benítez called Albert Riera out to replace him for the Israeli Yossi Benayoun, who worked very well in the left line, helping Torres reach the front to make, on extra time (93’), the second goal.

Thus the Liverpool earned a well deserved victory that places them in the second position of the Barclays Premier League with 51 points and high chances of fighting against Manchester United for the leadership, who is right now at the head of the table with 53 points and a game less than Liverpool and Chelsea, that stays in the third spot.
