You Didn't Use a Storage Shed Kit! Good for You!

8 Simple Steps to Planning Your Project

You have built this fantastic little building in your backyard, (you did it with a blueprint and not a storage shed kit) and have adopted it as your very own workshop shed. Next thing on the agenda is to start the first project but you are not sure where to start. Here is a basic outline of the planning steps to take before starting your project. If you ask yourself the following questions and address each one before starting the project, you can be confident that it will run smoothly:

  1. Is a permit required? If you are doing any work that is going to alter the condition of your home a permit will most likely be required. Anything more extensive than replacing a rotting window will need a permit in most jurisdictions. If your project requires a permit than a detailed plan and a list of materials will need to be shown to the building inspector.
  2. How will the project affect my living space? If you are building a wall or replacing a window it may affect your living space so weigh the pros and cons the project will produce before starting.
  3. What types of materials will work best for my project? Take into consideration the current decor of the space you are going to change and choose building materials that are going to match. Make sure the materials you purchase meet the building codes.
  4. Which tools do I need? There may be specific tools that are needed that you do not have in your arsenal. Bear in mind that many specialized tools are not essential. For instance dado cuts for shelves can be made with a circular saw instead of a router and mitre cuts can be made with a hacksaw and a mitre box. The drawback with not using the specialized tools is that the job may take longer to complete.
  5. Layout your project. Laying out the actual size of your project will help you visualize the end result and may demonstrate issues that were not obvious from a drawing.
  6. Examine the area. Make sure that there are no impediments such as wiring or duct work around the area you will be working in.
  7. Draw cutting diagrams to help you make efficient use of your materials.
  8. Make a list of your materials and use it to organize your work and estimate costs.

Attention to details, materials, costs, and local building codes are issues that should be taken into account in the planning stages of each of your projects. Good luck and have fun!
