England's Great Hope For The World Cup - Wayne Rooney
The departure of Christiano Ronaldo from Manchester Utd has done Wayne Rooney a favour. He now plays in his favourite position and has been an inspirational performer for Manchester United this season. Rooney has so far scored 27 goals in 19 games this season while Ronaldo has only manages 18 goals in 17 games for Real Madrid. He is playing with a new vigour and maturity.
Rooney's skill and ability will prove to be invaluable for England. During the 2006 World Cup finals, his most memorable achievement was his sending off during the quarter final defeat to Portugal. Rooney will be itching to atone for his mistake. The sight of his then team mate Ronaldo, winking at the Portugal bench, added notoriety to the incident.
Fabio Capello understands that Rooney is an extraordinary player who is talented and willing to learn. He knows that under the guidance of Sir Alex Ferguson at Man Utd, he only has to make sure he plays in the box and continues to score goals at every opportunity. The problem Capello has is who to play alongside him. Jermaine Defoe is in great form at Spurs but are the two player able to play together, both are gaol poachers, deadly in the box. Previously, Capello has preferred to play a big, holding player up front alongside Rooney. The chances are that Emile Heskey and Peter Crouch will feature in the England line up. There may even be starts for Carlton Cole if he continues his good form at West Ham United.
With great players like Frank Lampard, James Milner, Owen Hargreaves, Rio Ferdinand and Steven Gerrard also in the England team, this is the best chance of success for many years.
This World Cup could belong to Wayne Rooney, it's his chance to shine. Let's hope he stays fit.
