Soccer - Victory and Failure for Bayern Munich

On April 24th of this year the Semifinals of the 37th UEFA Cup took place. The Europe Cup Competition for football clubs was founded 1971 and is organized by the Union of Europe Football Association (UEFA). The German football champion Bayern Munich was able to achieve a tie at the semifinal’s first leg against the Russian club Zenit St. Petersburg. At the return leg though, they had to admit the defeat with a final score of 4-0. Munich’s dream of a third championship will not come true.

In the second semifinal game, the Scottish football club Glasgow Rangers managed to win against the Italian team AC Florence with a 4-2 on penalties. The final took place on Wednesday, May 14th at the City of Manchester Stadium. The Scots were hoping for their first title win at a European competition in 36 years. Back in 1972 the team had won their only Europe Cup. Nationally the club is very successful; they hold the world record of 51 championship titles. In the second half of the final among Zenit St. Petersburg and Glasgow Rangers, the Russian team was leading the game and thanks to two goals in the 72nd and 94th minute they were able to secure the title.

On May 4th, just one and a half weeks after Munich’s keen disappointment at the UEFA Cup, the Bavarian team managed to assure themselves their seventh championship at the Bundesliga. Though there are still three match days left for the season to end, the second placed club Werder Bremen is ten uncatchable points away. With this victory the national goalkeeper Oliver Kahn says goodbye to the international stage. The team probably has to list another loss with the forward Lukas Podolski. The best young player at the World Cup 2007 is tired of watching the games from the reserve bench. He wants to be a first-team regular and not play every two games. The situation has been like this for two years. Coach Ottmar Hitzfeld will leave the team after this season as well and will be replaced by the former national coach Jürgen Klinsmann.

At the end of the season the Bavarian Club also wanted to do something good and they organized a charity match to provide financial aid to the traditional club SV Darmstadt 98. The club was founded in 1898 and is one of the oldest clubs in the German football. To escape a bankruptcy the club has to remargin around 1.1 million Euros on taxes and social insurance until the middle of June. The main sponsor of the club was the leading cosmetic supplier Wella which has its corporate headquarters in Darmstadt but the contract was cancelled in the beginning of 2008 due to the risk of bankruptcy and even though there are still some smaller sponsors, it is not enough to get them out of the books.

The charity match took place on Tuesday, May 13th at the sold out Böllenfalltor-Stadium. The Bavarians showed up with the best possible team and donated the profit from the game to the fourth division team Darmstadt. Despite a 5-11 defeat, the club from Darmstadt can celebrate, not only because they got over the financial crisis, also because the team will move up to the regional league in the following season.
