American Soccer - Will America's Winning Streak Continue?
Cruising past the qualifying rounds for the World Cup, the U.S. made a place for itself in the final Hexagonal round to be played this year and that too with enough margins to be able to spare 2 games. This gave the Americans the chance to test their rookies and find real talent amongst them during the last 2 qualifying matches so they would have some wild cards to play if the need arose. Americans had an enjoyable time with all players in top gear for the coming World Cup.
Things couldn't have been more different for the Mexicans. Mexico lost its' last World Cup qualifier to Honduras. It seemed like the team was bereft of all its former glory and appeared to be a mere shadow of itself. The sixth and last qualifier at Estadio Olimpico held in San Pedro Sula was evidence of this. They just barely crawled into the Hexagonal on goal difference.
Fans following the latest scores could not believe that the 2 arch rivals should have manifested such different forms. Their performance in 2009 will most likely be poles apart from one another. However, Mexico is slowly and gradually untangling itself from its' poor performance whereas America is still going strong not unlike the past 2 years since Bob Bradley started coaching them.
One of the most anticipated World Cup qualifiers will take place between these two nations on 11th February in Columbus, Ohio. It seems like things are looking up for the Americans and they may have a good time of it. Mexico, on the other hand, found itself at the bottom of the points card of the 6 Hexagonal participants. They trudged through the semi finals making it into the next phase only by a goal differential. El Tri finished in the 6th place out of the 6 teams.
The Mexicans have gone from bad to worse as they find themselves in poor form. One would think that participation in the league matches my have boosted up their spirits and performance but this was not to be. But unfortunately, the leagues proved just the opposite as star players for Mexico had to miss out on the qualifiers due to injuries. Andres Guardado sustained a calf injury; Rafael Marquez strained a muscle during the Spanish league matches. Similarly, Jonny Magallon couldn't play due to a broken arm and Aaron Galindo had injured his knee and as a result could not make them available for the matches.
As if this wasn't bad enough, Mexico will not be able to play 3 other top players having been suspended after receiving cards in the semi final matches. One more hindrance in the way of Mexico's win is the rearing of the foreigner scandal. As any ardent soccer fan would be aware of this there is no need for me to go into the details. It is enough to say that the criticism is very harsh and has led to dampening the spirits of Mexican players.
