You Can Go Home Again - Soccer Worldcup Betting
Soccer worldcup betting - Soccer 2010 Betting - St. Louis native Steve Ralston will play for his hometown team, AC St. Louis of the NASL this season.
ST. LOUIS, Former New England Revolution midfielder Steve Ralston proved Monday that you can go home again, even if you have to wait more than a decade.
Ralston signed with AC St. Louis of the new North American Soccer League, becoming the club’s first player. Ralston also will serve as an assistant coach. Ralston, 35, is a 14-year MLS veteran, is the the lelague's career assists leader and holds the record for most appearances by a professional player in the United States.
The NASL, along with United Soccer Leagues, is the second tier of American soccer.
”This is a day I always dreamed would happen,” Ralston said in a statement. “I think anyone who plays professional sports wants to play in their hometown. I am fortunate to get to do just that at this stage of my career. Obviously it is an exciting time for soccer in St. Louis since we now have our own professional team. I am honored to be the first player to become a part of this new franchise.”
AC St. Louis chairman Jeff Cooper welcomed Ralston with open arms.
”Bringing a veteran leader into our team as a building block of our franchise is absolutely crucial for us,” he said in a statement. “The fact that he grew up in St. Louis and is a well known name to sports fans here is just a bonus. It is not everyday you get to bring home a player that has played the most games in the history of the MLS.”
Ralston will serve as an assistant to head coach Claude Anelka and director of player development Francisco Filho.
”This is a unique role for me to have,” Ralston said. “I think I am ready for the challenge. Having a chance to give your input as a coach for a team that is being built is a special opportunity.”
Ralston’s name can be found in the MLS record book. He is first all-time in the league in games played (378), assists (135) and minutes played (33,143) Ralston is also a former member of the U.S. National team and has been capped 36 times. He played the last eight seasons with the New England Revolution. He was drafted by Tampa Bay in 1996, earning rookie of the years honors and playing his first six seasons with the Mutiny before the club disbanded after the 2001 season. He was selected by New England in the 2002 dispersal draft.
Ralston attended Oakville High School in St. Louis. He played one year of college soccer 2010 betting in St. Louis at Forest Park Community College for coach and National Soccer Hall of Famer Pat McBride. He finished his collegiate career at Florida International University.
